Tannen’s Magic Shop

The objective for this project was to design a retail store with an experience that could not be had online.

The idea behind this project was to embody the ideas behind Tannen’s and magic in general, which are wonder, mystery, and versatility. I wanted to encompass as much of the whimsy that is involved in magic and put that into a conventional retail environment. The one thing that sets Tannen’s apart from a clothing retailer is that it’s all about the user experience and creating an environment that keeps customers in the store for hours.

There are homages to the great magicians in the form of vintage posters throughout the store, as well as classic magic tricks such as: the rabbit out of the hat, sawing the woman in half, levitating rings, disappearing and reappearing (in the opaque and clear glass around the floating staircase and in the back hallway behind the dressing rooms), hidden rooms, portraits with moving eyes, floating furniture, interlocking rings, and card tricks.
